Lieutenant Colonel Richard Green was posted to 5th Aviation Regiment (5 Avn) in Townsville in January 1997 as a Black Hawk pilot. While posted to 5 Avn, Lieutenant Colonel Green deployed to Papua New Guinea for drought relief operations, to East Timor as part of the UN stabilisation force and flew with the Special Forces as part of the security detachment for the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the 2002 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Lieutenant Colonel Green has also flown King Air and Twin Otter fixed wing aircraft with 173rd Surveillance Squadron and was an instructor at the ADF Basic Flying Training School in Tamworth.

Lieutenant Colonel Green’s Squadron Command was back at 5 Avn as the Officer Commanding A Squadron, flying the MRH Taipan. At the end of his tenure as an OC, Lieutenant Colonel Green deployed as the Aviation Detachment Commander in East Timor, flying Black Hawks.

Lieutenant Colonel Green’s most recent deployment was as the J5 at Headquarters Joint Task Force 633 in the Middle East Area of Operations.

Lieutenant Colonel Green’s staff postings have been to Headquarters Joint Operations Command, as a staff officer to the Director General Aviation, as the Tiger helicopter capability manager, as the Deputy Director of the Battlefield Aviation Program and as the SO1 of Army Aviation’s Advanced Warfighting and Evaluation Section.

Lieutenant Colonel Green assumed Command of 723 Squadron on 13 December 2019.
