Lieutenant Commander Craig Barnett

Lieutenant Commander Craig Barnett joined the Navy in 1987 via Recruit School at HMAS Cerberus. He graduated in 1988 as a Seaman Radio Operator Electronic Warfare (EW). After a short posting to HMAS Stuart, he commenced submarine training where he was posted to HMAS Ovens in 1990. He was then posted to the NUSHIP Collins commissioning crew as a LSEWSM. This led to the completion of his Petty Officer of the Watch qualification and promotion to the rank of POEWSM. Lieutenant Commander Barnett was then posted to Submarine Sea Training Group (AUSFLTSTG-SM) where he was a key member in the safety and operational training of all submarines and promoted to CPOEWSM in 1998. This was followed by Lieutenant Commander Barnett posting to the Chief Instructor position in the submarine school, overseeing the upgrade to Electronic Warfare training to include computer-based training.

2002 saw Lieutenant Commander Barnett promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer where he was posted as the Staff Officer Electronic Warfare overseeing the acquisition and integration of new CONDOR ESM system in all submarines. In 2004 Lieutenant Commander Barnett was posted to Submarine Human Resources as the Warrant Officer Manpower position, where he was instrumental in curbing the separation rate of submariners and actively recruited new submariners from Recruit School, New Entry Officers’ Course and Australian Defence Force Academy. Lieutenant Commander Barnett was then posted to the new position of Officer in Charge Submarine Support Group where he developed the concept of operations and associated practices for the new Group.

In 2010 Lieutenant Commander Barnett commissioned as a Lieutenant where he commenced his Maritime Warfare Officer training culminating with his Bridge Watchkeeping Certificate in HMAS Waller in 2013. Lieutenant Commander Barnett then completed his Intermediate Navigator course. 2014 saw Lieutenant Commander Barnett assigned as the Mission Commander for Operation SOUTHERN OCEAN embarked on ADV Ocean Shield where he coordinated the search forces for MH370 the Malaysian aircraft in the Indian Ocean. In 2015 Lieutenant Commander Barnett was posted to Headquarters Joint Operations Command where he was employed within the Submarine Operations section. Assuming the role of Executive Officer in ADV Cape Fourcroy (Starboard Crew) mid 2017, conducting Operation RESOLUTE during this period.

Lieutenant Commander Barnett assumed Command of ADV Cape Fourcroy Starboard Crew on 29 June 2020. Since assuming Command, Lieutenant Commander Barnett has completed an extended docking and workup period in preparation for operations.
