Lieutenant Commander Elizabeth Newman

LCDR Elizabeth “Libby” Newman grew up in Brisbane, Queensland before joining the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in January 2010 as an Army Officer Cadet. She later transferred to the Royal Australian Navy, graduating ADFA with a Bachelor of Business in December 2012.

The then MIDN Newman completed New Entry Officer Course 48 in June 2013 and was awarded the Commander (E) Robert Gray Perpetual Cup for outstanding individual athletic accomplishment and resolve. She then proceeded on Junior Warfare Application Course and served in HMA Ships Sydney (IV), Choules, Childers and Launceston before graduating from the Bridge Training Faculty (BTF) in December 2015 with a Bridge Warfare Certificate.

LEUT Newman received her Platform Endorsement in HMAS Sirius where she served until August 2017 and in January 2018, was awarded an Australia Day Medallion for the execution of the role of Assistant Operations Officer whilst on board. LEUT Newman had the pleasure of serving HMAS Launceston as Executive Officer from November 2017 to August 2019 before joining the BTF as an Instructor to Phase 4 trainees. In 2020, she undertook the role of Aide-de-Camp to the Hon Darren Chester MP, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister for Defence Personnel.

In early 2021, LCDR Newman joined the Headquarters Joint Operations Command J3 Branch before posting back to Sydney in 2023 in preparation for her role as Commanding Officer STS Young Endeavour.

LCDR Newman enjoys hiking and staying active in her spare time and, recently completed a Master of Cyber Security, Strategy and Diplomacy.
