Lieutenant Commander Ian McKellar

LCDR Ian McKellar

Lieutenant Commander Ian McKellar was born in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria in the UK, however, he was raised and educated in Brisbane, Queensland. In 2004, he joined the Royal Australian Navy for what would be the beginning of a rewarding and fulfilling career.

He commenced the Junior Warfare Application Course in 2005 progressing the various phases in HMA Ships Tobruk, Townsville, Gascoyne, Ballarat, USS Boxer and was awarded his Bridge Warfare Certificate in 2007. Mine Warfare Officers Course was completed in 2008 before posting as the Operations Officer in HMA Ships Hawkesbury and Norman. During this time he assisted with the vessels being placed into extended readiness. 2009 saw the selection as the Executive Officer (XO) of MHC Crew 2 and during this tenure he was XO of HMA Ships Diamantina and Huon.

Specialising as a Military Geospatial Officer (Hydrographic), Ian completed the H2 course and graduated as an IHO Category B Hydrographic Surveyor in 2011. On course completion he was selected as XO HMAS Mermaid, and in 2013 was selected as XO of Laser Airborne Depth Sounder Flight.

In September 2015, Ian was selected for the Royal Navy’s Advanced Survey Course at HMS Drake in the UK. Graduating in 2016 with honours, as an IHO Category A Hydrographic Surveyor and awarded a Post Graduate Diploma in Hydrographic Survey with Distinction from Plymouth University, he then posted to HS Red Crew as the Senior Assistant Surveyor serving in HMA Ships Leeuwin and Melville.

His operational service has included Operations CRANBERRY, RELEX II, RESOLUTE, QUEENSLAND FLOOD ASSIST 2011 and QUEENSLAND ASSIST 2017.
