LCDR Jason Mullen

Lieutenant Commander Jason Mullen, RAN is a Lateral Entry Officer who joined the Royal Australian Navy in 2013. Educated at Kingston University in London, he holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Economics and a Masters of Science degree in Information Technology. He joined the Royal Navy at 23 and underwent initial training at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth before proceeding to sea in a variety of units.

After professional training at the Maritime Warfare School and qualification as a Mine Clearance and Diving Officer, he was appointed to a succession of Hunt Class mine countermeasures vessels (MCMV). He served as the Operations Officer in HMS Brocklesby and as the Executive Officer of HMS Berkeley. On completion of the Principal Warfare Officer’s Course, and qualification as an Above Water Warfare and Gunnery Specialist, he served in HMS Cornwall as the Principal Warfare Officer (Above Water) (PWO(A)) and Operations Officer. This appointment included an Arabian Gulf Deployment in support of Iraqi Oil Platform protection.

Ashore, he has served as the Head Instructor at the UK Defence Diving School, Chief Of Staff to the UK’s Mine Warfare Battle Staff and Deputy Commander of the First Mine Countermeasures (MCM) Squadron. The former included another Middle East deployment where he was responsible for establishing an enduring MCM capability, which included 4 MCMVs, a forward logistic and engineering base and an Afloat Staging Base. During this time, Mullen helped establish the newly formed United States Navy/Royal Navy MCM Command, CTF 52, which continues today as a major Combined Task Force in the Middle East.

His final appointment in the Royal Navy was as an Exchange Officer to the US Naval Mine Warfare and Anti-submarine Command in San Diego.

Since joining the Royal Australian Navy, he has worked at the PWO Faculty at HMAS Watson, and at the Mine Warfare and Clearance Diving Task Group (MCDTG) as both Staff Officer Mine Warfare and Staff Officer Clearance Diving. He has also deployed to the Middle East in support of the Australian led CTF 150 (OP SLIPPER) and served as the Future Operations Officer for OP SAVILLE.

Lieutenant Commander Mullen assumed Command of HMAS Huon in December 2015.
