LCDR Jonathan Lyons

Lieutenant Commander Jonathan Lyons, RAN joined the Royal Australian Navy in February 1991 under the Undergraduate Scheme and studied a Bachelor of Arts at Flinders University, South Australia majoring in English and Philosophy.

He was posted to HMAS Creswell in 1993 for initial officer training and from there to HMAS Watson to commence professional training as a Seaman Officer. During the Seaman Officer Application Course (SEAAC), he was posted to HMA Ships Derwent, Torrens, Tobruk and Tarakan on various deployments and exercises. In 1994 Jonathan was posted to HMAS Gawler as the Fourth Officer (Under Training) as the final phase of SEAAC.

After a year in HMAS Gawler he was posted to HMAS Success. In early 1995 he was posted to STS Young Endeavour as the Boats Officer and later as the Navigating Officer. He spent two years sailing on 10 day voyages around Australia.

In 1998 he was posted to HMAS Creswell as a Divisional Officer to the Navy new entry course. In late 1998 Jonathan was posted to the Executive Officer (XO) Designate Course at HMAS Watson. In 1999 Jonathan took over as XO of HMAS Gawler and spent the next two years at sea doing fisheries and immigration patrols.

After completing the Commanding Officer’s (CO) Design Course and Small Ships Navigation Course, he took command of HMAS Betano in Dili Harbour, East Timor in April 2001. (During this period he also commanded HMAS Brunei for an 8 week period as relief CO). As part of the UN Peacekeeping/Monitoring Force, Betano was sent to Bougainville as part of the Peace Monitoring Group for Operation BELISI II. In December of 2002 he handed over command of Betano and was posted to the Australian Joint Intelligence Centre (ASTJIC) at Maritime Headquarters, Sydney.

In 2004 he was posted to ADFA, Canberra as the Officer Commanding Physical and Recreational Training at the ADFA Indoor Sports Centre. After six months, he was transferred to Officer Commanding 1 Bravo Squadron one of the two first year squadrons at ADFA.

In December 2005 he took command of HMAS Gladstone, a Fremantle class Patrol Boat based out of Cairns. In 2008 Jonathan took up the position of Maritime Surveillance Officer to Vanuatu.

In January 2011 after completing three years in Vanuatu Jonathan was posted to Canberra as a Staff Officer at Navy International Engagement. In December 2012 he was posted to Brisbane to take up the position of Military Support Officer at the Brisbane office of the Defence Community Organisation. 

In addition to his BA, Lieutenant Commander Lyons has a Graduate Diploma in International Relations, a Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate in Management and is due to complete a Masters of Business Administration in 2016.

In June 2016 Lieutenant Commander Lyons took command of HMAS Launceston.
