LCDR Mark Matthews

Lieutenant Commander Matthews joined the Royal Australian Navy from Adelaide in 1985, and completed initial academic and military training through the RAN Naval College and the Australian Defence Force Academy. He assumed Command of the LADS Flight in January 2017.

After qualifying as Officer of the Watch in HMAS Cook he completed training as a Hydrographic Surveyor in 1990 and had subsequent postings to HMAS Shepparton as an assistant surveyor, HMAS Moresby as the Boats Officer and Senior Assistant Surveyor, and as the Officer in Charge of the Hydrographic Office Detached Survey Unit where he deployed on several occasions to Antarctica.

After completing the Long Hydrographic Course at HMS Drake and being awarded the Course Dux he assumed Command of HMAS Mermaid in 1998. As the Charge Surveyor for Mermaid and sister ship HMAS Paluma he undertook surveys along in Torres Strait, along the Queensland coast and into New Guinea. This period also included a deployment to the Bougainville region where Mermaid and Paluma provided operational support to the Peace Monitoring Group following conflict in the region. In 2001 Lieutenant Commander Matthews assumed Command of the Laser Airborne Depth Sounder (LADS) Flight and oversaw survey operations across much of Queensland in addition to short interstate deployments.

Lieutenant Commander Matthews transferred to the Navy Reserve in 2005 to pursue a career in the commercial Hydrographic industry. Roles within the commercial sphere have included business development, training and marketing, in addition to maintaining an active role as a hydrographic surveyor undertaking surveys around Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and as far afield as Europe and Madagascar. Since leaving full time service he has maintained an active career in the reserves with a continuing role at LADS Flight in addition to supporting other Hydrographic units.

Lieutenant Commander Matthews holds a Bachelor of Science (Oceanography and Geography), Graduate Diploma of Hydrographic Surveying, and is a Level One Certified Professional Hydrographic Surveyor with the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute of Australia.
