LCDR Peter Locke

Lieutenant Commander Peter Locke was born in Wollongong, NSW and joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1997 as a Recruit Electronics Technician. In 1999, after successfully completing his trade training at HMAS Cerberus, Locke commenced Collins Class submarine training at HMAS Stirling. Locke was awarded his Dolphins in 2000 whilst serving in HMAS Waller. Subsequent sea postings to HMA Submarines’ Farncomb and Dechaineux followed before taking up a maintenance and instructional water work role at the Submarine Escape Training Facility.

Locke commissioned as an Officer in July 2004 and successfully completed the New Entry Officer Course at HMAS Creswell. In 2005, Locke commenced the Junior Warfare Officer Application Course training continuum. Throughout this training, Locke served in HMA Ships Darwin, Geraldton and Sydney before being awarded his Bridge Warfare Certificate in HMAS Diamantina in 2007.

In April 2008, Locke commenced specialist training as a Maritime Geospatial Officer - Hydrography (MGO-H) and graduated from the RAN H2 Survey Course at HMAS Penguin in October 2008. On completion, Locke was posted to HS Red Crew as the Boat’s Officer and OIC Detached Surveys where he gained his IHO accredited ‘Category B’ Hydrographic Surveying qualification.

In July 2010 Locke posted to Canberra and assumed the role of Staff Officer 3 Rapid Environmental Assessment at HQJOC. Throughout this posting Locke gained valuable insight into the tri-service environment. A highlight of this posting was providing geospatial support to Operation QUEENSLAND FLOOD ASSIST in 2010/11.

In September 2011, Locke was selected to attend the Royal Navy H1 Advanced Survey Course at HMS Drake. On completion in February 2012, Locke was awarded the IHO accredited ‘Category A’ Hydrographic Surveying qualification. On return to Australia, Locke was posted to HS Blue Crew as the Senior Assistant Surveyor. Throughout this posting Locke was involved in Border Protection duties in support of Operation RESOLUTE whilst also completing surveys in northern Australian waters.

In December 2013, Locke assumed Command of HMAS Paluma. Whilst in Command, Locke was involved in survey operations in support of the National Charting and Military effort.

In January 2016, Locke returned to Canberra to work with Capability Acquisition and Sustain Group as the Project Realisation Manager for SEA1770 Phase 1 - Rapid Environmental Assessment. During this posting, Locke was awarded the ADF Bronze Commendation for professionalism and leadership.

Lieutenant Commander Locke assumed Command of HS WHITE Crew on 13 December 2017 and embarked in HMAS Leeuwin on 24 January 2018.
