LCDR Robert Short

Lieutenant Commander Robert Short joined the Royal Australian Navy in July 2003 from Sydney. Early sea postings included HMA Ships Ipswich (II), Newcastle and Norman (II) before achieving his Bridge Warfare Certificate in 2006 in HMAS Kanimbla (II) while deployed to Operation QUICKSTEP.

In 2007 the then Lieutenant Short completed Intermediate Navigation course and navigated HMA Ships Yarra (IV) and Norman (II). After completing the Long N navigation course in 2009, the then Lieutenant Short served as Navigating Officer in HMA Ships Ballarat (II) and Stuart (III).

Between 2011 and 2015 Lieutenant Short gained qualifications in Advanced Navigation Course and Principle Warfare Course. During this period the then Lieutenant Short conducted an exchange to the RNZN as Navigating Officer of HMNZS Endeavour before returning to Australia to Navigate HMAS Choules. During 2014 and 2015 Lieutenant Commander Short posted to Sea Training Group in the role of Fleet Navigating Officer Minor War Vessels. Following this role Lieutenant Commander Short undertook duties as Navigating Officer in HMA Ships Canberra (III) and Choules before posting ashore as the Port Services Manager East.

Lieutenant Commander Short has deployed extensively across the Indo-Asia-Pacific regions including Operations RELEX II; RESOLUTE; ASTUTE; QUICKSTEP; DELUGE; SLIPPER; LANDSCAPE; FIJI ASSIST 2016 and QUEENSLAND ASSIST 2017.

Lieutenant Commander Short holds a Degree in Ministries and a Graduate Certificate in Science (Astronomy).

Lieutenant Commander Short assumed Command of HMAS Huon (II) in August 2019.
