Lieutenant Commander Shaun Poing-Destre

Lieutenant Commander Shaun Poing-Destre, RAN was raised in Brisbane, Queensland and joined the Royal Australian Navy in January 2003 as a Midshipman at the Royal Australian Naval College, HMAS Creswell. Graduating in June 2003 he proceeded to sea for training as a Maritime Warfare Officer in HMA Ships Melbourne, Labuan, Leeuwin and Melville.

Shaun commenced specialist training in hydrographic surveying at HMAS Penguin in 2006. Follow on postings included Officer in Charge Detached Surveys HS WHITE Crew, Staff Officer Three Rapid Environmental Assessment within Headquarters Joint Operations Command, Executive Officer of HMAS Paluma and Officer In Charge of the Survey Motor Boats Squadron.

In 2014, Shaun attended the Royal Navy’s Advanced Hydrographic Surveying course at HMS Drake in the UK. Completing the course, Shaun was awarded an International Hydrographic Organisation recognised Category A Hydrographic Surveyor qualification and additionally awarded a Post Graduate Diploma in Hydrographic Surveying with Distinction from Plymouth University. On his return to Australia he was posted to HS RED Crew as the Senior Assistant Surveyor.

Throughout his career thus far, Shaun has undertaken service within Operations CATALYST, ANODE, RESOLUTE, QUEENSLAND FLOOD ASSIST and SOLANIA. As part of the Hydrographic Survey Fleet, Shaun has conducted Hydrographic Operations all around the Australia mainland as well as Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.

Lieutenant Commander Poing-Destre assumed command of HMAS Shepparton in June 2016 and is looking forward to following in the footsteps of the great Naval surveyors that preceded him in his exploration of the uncharted. ‘By Wisdom & Courage’
