Growing up on Thursday Island, Leading Seaman (LS) Tayshaun Mosby’s connection to the sea, family and culture led him to the Navy, where he now serves while strengthening ties with First Nations communities.
A Torres Strait Islander man with family links across Masig, Erub and Mer Islands, LS Mosby says the ocean has always been central to identity and daily life.
LS Mosby joined Navy in July 2019, his decision to enlist shaped by his upbringing and his family’s strong maritime history, including relatives who worked on pearling luggers.
As a Marine Technician LS Mosby holds a Certificate III in Fixed and Mobile Plant Mechanic, which he partially completed at Training Authority Engineering HMAS Cerberus before finishing his trade qualification at Fleet Support Unit Kuttabul and in HMAS Sydney.
He later completed his Marine Systems Technician Course (DDG-specific) at the Navy Training Centre, Randwick Barracks, before posting to Sydney. While there, he continued his professional development, achieving his Marine Systems Manager Engineering Watch Keeping Certificate.
Much of his career has been spent at sea as an engineering watch keeper, monitoring ship systems and conducting maintenance. Now serving as the Regional Indigenous Development Coordinator at HMAS Moreton, LS Mosby works with First Nations communities to build relationships and support pathways into Navy. Maintaining a strong connection to culture, community and Country remains central to his service, particularly his connection to the sea.
LS Mosby is particularly proud of Navy’s Indigenous Development Program, which he has seen create opportunities for family and friends.
He values flexible working arrangements that enable him to return regularly to Thursday Island to reconnect with family, community and culture.
LS Mosby is transitioning to a new role outside Navy as a Community Engagement Officer with the Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit at the University of Queensland, enabling him to maximise opportunities across both his civilian career and Navy Reserve service.
Outside of work, LS Mosby enjoys keeping active and unwinding with his four-month-old Cocker Spaniel, Benny. He is an avid follower of camping, fishing and hunting content, and a dedicated Melbourne Storm supporter.
