Born and raised in Redcliffe, Queensland, Petty Officer Jade Delaporte is a proud Yamatji and Noongar man whose family connections stretch from the arid inland regions of Western Australia to the state’s south-west coastline. He joined the Royal Australian Navy in September 2004 and commenced training as a Seaman Cook in January 2005, beginning what would become more than two decades of service as a Navy Chef and leader.
Over the past 22 years of service, his Navy journey has also strengthened his connection to culture and Country. Through meeting other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander personnel, sharing stories and learning from community, he has developed a deeper understanding of his heritage and identity.
Now serving as the Regional Indigenous Development Coordinator at HMAS Cerberus, Petty Officer Delaporte plays an important mentoring and advocacy role for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sailors. He works closely with members as they progress through training and service life, encouraging them to stay connected to their culture and remember where they come from.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the role for Petty Officer Delaporte has been building connections within the First Nations community and strengthening ties to his own heritage in Western Australia. He also supports engagement with families and community groups at Cerberus, helping foster relationships with the local Bunurong people through cultural activities, events and community participation.
Petty Officer Delaporte is passionate about promoting cultural awareness and education across the wider Navy community. He believes reconciliation is about moving forward together, encouraging all personnel, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike, to learn, participate and share in culture and community.
