The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) maintains a significant presence in South Queensland through HMAS Moreton, located at Bulimba on the Brisbane River.
Moreton is responsible for the coordination and administration of RAN activity in the area of operation which encompasses 22,000 square kilometres stretching from the New South Wales (NSW) border to the Tropic of Capricorn.
The Senior Naval Officer for the region is CO Moreton.
Moreton delivers Navy shore based capability in order to support Australian Defence Force (ADF) operations on an enduring basis, and is responsible for supporting RAN and foreign naval vessel visits in the region including visiting minor war vessels at the Moreton pontoon.
Moreton also provides visit liaison and ceremonial support to visiting ships into the ports of Gladstone, Brisbane, Bundaberg and Southport.
Moreton includes the Royal Australian Navy Band Queensland, and the Moreton Flotilla – Australian Navy Cadets. The shore base provides support and administration to over 1000 Navy personnel in the area including a large number of Navy Reserve personnel.
Moreton, formerly Navy Headquarters - South Queensland, was commissioned on 14 May 2016.
This is the second time that a naval establishment has been commissioned HMAS Moreton in Brisbane. A comprehensive history of the original HMAS Moreton is available via the Navy history section.
