This privacy notice explains how Defence collects, uses and manages personal information. It applies to individuals who register for updates about the Navy Civilian Engineer Development Program.

Collection of personal information

The Department of Defence (Defence) collects and manages personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

The personal information collected through this process is collected by the Navy Civilian Engineer Development Program (CEDP) on behalf of Defence.

Contact details of the collecting area

Individuals may contact Defence Privacy for general privacy enquiries or to request access to, or correction of, personal information held by Defence. This is in accordance with Australian Privacy Principles 12 and 13.

Purpose of collection

Defence collects your personal information for the primary purpose of providing a one-off notification to prospective applicants regarding the opening of the CEDP application period.

Your personal information is collected to enable Defence to identify individuals who have requested notification and to communicate information relating to the CEDP application process.

The provision of personal information for this purpose is voluntary.

Use and disclosure of personal information

The personal information collected may be used and disclosed by Defence for purposes directly related to the primary purpose of collection, including:

  • Notifying prospective applicants of the opening of the CEDP application period.
  • Responding to enquiries relating to the CEDP notification process.
  • Administering and maintaining records associated with the CEDP notification list.

Personal information may also be used for related administrative purposes, including meeting Defence's legal, audit, reporting, record-keeping and governance obligations.

Defence may also use or disclose personal information for secondary purposes where authorised or required by law, or where the secondary purpose is reasonably related to the primary purpose of collection.

Depending on the circumstances, personal information may be disclosed to Defence personnel responsible for administering the CEDP, information management functions, and legal, audit or governance functions where required.

Defence does not ordinarily disclose personal information collected through this process to overseas recipients.

Any disclosure will occur in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and other applicable legislative requirements.

Consequences of not providing information

If requested personal information is not provided, Defence may be unable to:

  • notify you when the CEDP application period opens
  • respond to enquiries relating to the CEDP notification process
  • communicate important information relating to the CEDP application process
  • maintain an accurate record of individuals who have requested notification.
