RADM Michael Noonan

Michael 'Mike' Noonan, joined the Royal Australian Naval College in 1984 and graduated in 1986 with a Diploma of Applied Science. He trained as a seaman officer and in due course became a Principal Warfare Officer and Air Direction specialist. Commander Noonan deployed to the Middle East Area of Operations, in 2002, as the Chief of Staff in the AustraIian National Command Headquarters and was awarded a Commendation for Distinguished Service in 2003 for his efforts in this challenging role. He was commanding officer of HMAS Parramatta from her commissioning in 2003 until late 2005; which included deployments on border protection patrols and to Exercise RIMPAC, in Hawaiian waters, in 2004.

His subsequent postings as a captain included Director of Sailor's Career Management during a period of considerable change within the Navy's personnel and career management and as the Chief of Staff in Headquarters Joint Task Force 633, in the Middle East, during September 2008 - March 2009 for which he was awarded a second Commendation for Distinguished Service. Following promotion to commodore he served as Commodore Training (where he was responsible for all individual and collective training across the Royal Australian Navy), Director General Operations in Headquarters Joint Operations Command (where he was responsible for the control and oversight of all operations and joint exercises involving the Australian Defence Force) and also as Director Military Strategic Commitments. He was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in June 2012 for exceptional performance of duty and leadership as Director General Operations, Headquarters Joint Operations Command and as Director Military Strategic Commitments

Michael Noonan was promoted rear admiral on 25 November 2013 and in December of that year was appointed as Commander Border Protection Command with oversight of maritime barrier operations in Australian waters.

Rear Admiral Noonan was appointed as the Deputy Chief of Navy (DCN) in January 2016. In March 2018 he handed over the appointment of Deputy Chief of Navy to Rear Admiral Mark Hammond.

On 16 April 2018, it was announced that Rear Admiral Noonan will be appointed Chief of Navy with effect from July 2018.
